Check Your Rider-to-Horse Ratio Against the Newest Study
A new 134-rider study puts the mean rider-to-horse ratio at 12.9%. Run your own numbers, read the 15% and 20% bands, and see what balance changes.
By the numbers, most worried riders are not too heavy. A University of Helsinki survey of 134 riders, published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science on 24 August 2026, found a mean rider-to-horse bodyweight ratio of 12.9%, a range of 7.7% to 23.1%, and an average self-set ceiling of 12.1%. The riders who called themselves too heavy were disproportionately the less experienced ones, not the ones at the top of the range. Run your own check the way the load research does: add rider and tack, divide by the horse’s ideal body weight. Under 15% is the customary green zone, 15% to 20% is a screening band that calls for a closer look at the whole pairing, and over 20% needs a vet and a saddle fitter before you assume the match works. The percentage is a screen, not a verdict. It cannot overrule lameness, a poorly fitting saddle, an unfit horse or an unstable rider.

What the 134-Rider Study Found
The study, “Survey of rider and horse size proportions and associated rider perceptions” by Karikoski, Rossi and Hyytiäinen, was presented as a poster at VetMed2025 in Tallinn on 30 October 2025 and published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science on 24 August 2026 (PubMed record). It surveyed 134 Finnish riders.

The fourth finding is the one that reframes the question. Less-experienced riders judged themselves “too heavy” far more often than skilled riders at the same ratio. The worry tracks confidence and skill more closely than it tracks the scale.
Read the figures for what they are. This is a perception survey of one national rider population. It did not measure horse gait, back pressure or soreness, so 12.1% is an opinion average, not a validated safety ceiling. The University of Helsinki research record states plainly that current rider-size assessments lack a scientific standard and calls for further welfare-focused research.
One practical note: the survey ratio is rider to horse. The 15% and 20% bands used in load guidance are rider plus tack. The calculator above shows both lines so you compare like with like.
How to Calculate the Full Load
The combined-load percentage is the total rider-and-equipment weight divided by the horse’s ideal body weight, multiplied by 100.
The total the horse carries includes:
- Your body weight in riding clothes, boots, helmet and body protector
- Saddle and stirrups
- Saddle pad, numnah or blanket
- Bridle and other tack
- Breastplate, breast collar, crupper or training equipment
- Saddlebags, food, water and anything else strapped on
Weigh the equipment rather than guessing. Stand on a bathroom scale holding the saddle and pad, then subtract your own weight. Weigh bags separately if you ride with them.
Use the horse’s ideal body weight, not a current overweight one. Extra fat on the horse does not raise its carrying allowance. If you are unsure of the ideal weight or body condition score, ask an equine vet. Both the ideal-weight basis and the inclusion of tack are built into the qualified 20% starting estimate published by University of Minnesota Extension.
Worked Example: Rider, Tack and a 500 kg Horse
A rider in boots and clothes weighs 85 kg. Saddle and all other equipment weigh 12 kg. The horse’s ideal weight is 500 kg.
Total load is 85 kg plus 12 kg, or 97 kg. Divided by 500 kg and multiplied by 100, that is 19.4%.
That 19.4% lands near the top of the amber band. It is not a stop sign, but it means the horse’s soundness, fitness, saddle fit and workload all need to be right before this pairing does regular work.
Why Leaving Out the Tack Changes the Band
A 90 kg rider on the same 500 kg horse is 18% alone. Add 12 kg of equipment and the load is 102 kg, or 20.4%. Counting only the rider makes the pairing look amber when the horse is actually carrying a red-band load.

Both columns include rider and all equipment. They are reference points for the next stage of assessment, not proof that a specific horse can comfortably do a specific job at that load.
What Horses Showed at 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% Loads
The 20% figure comes from customary guidance and a small body of experimental work, and the experiments are narrower than the way the rule gets quoted.
In one study, eight light-breed horses carried loads equal to 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of body weight through 45 minutes of light-to-moderate arena work. The horses showed fewer measured concerns at 15% and 20% than at 25% and 30%, where workload and muscle soreness increased. Eight horses, experienced balanced riders, one arena protocol: the result supports the 20% estimate for those conditions and says nothing about hills, jumping or repeated daily work (summary of the eight-horse load study).
A randomized pilot study tested six horses with experienced riders sorted into weight categories. All 13 tests involving the heavy and very-heavy riders were stopped under predefined lameness or behavioral criteria. The authors concluded that body weight and/or its distribution could contribute to temporary lameness and pain-related behavior, while noting that rider dimensions differed and saddle fit was not ideal for every combination (pilot study of rider-horse bodyweight ratio, gait and behavior). It cannot be reduced to a percentage rule.
A study of 16 Icelandic tour horses tested loads of roughly 20% to 35% and found that a standardized treadmill test generally failed to predict how each horse responded under saddle. The authors concluded the treadmill method was not usable for estimating an individual horse’s carrying capacity (Icelandic-horse weight-carrying study). Those were acute tests on a specialized population, not evidence that the tested loads suit other horses long term.
Taken together: heavier loads increased effort, soreness and the chance of temporary lameness or conflict behavior under the tested conditions. No study identifies a universal threshold that holds across horses, saddles, disciplines and terrain.
Why Experience Changes the Answer More Than a Few Kilos
The Helsinki finding that skilled riders at the same ratio rarely call themselves too heavy is a perception result. It does not prove that the horse feels a lighter load under a skilled rider. But the pilot study’s authors pointed at weight distribution, not weight alone, and distribution is exactly what balance and position control.
A rider who sits centered and follows the motion delivers a load that moves with the horse’s back. A rider who grips, braces, collapses one side or lands late in rising trot delivers the same kilograms as a shifting, uneven load with repeated impacts. The scale reads the same in both cases. The horse’s back does not.
That is why most “am I too heavy” worries are better answered by working on three things than by chasing a number:
- Trunk endurance, so you stop collapsing when tired
- Hip mobility and strength, so you can absorb motion instead of bracing against it
- Left-right symmetry, so the saddle stays central instead of drifting to your stronger side
All three are trainable off the horse. Trunk endurance, hip strength and mobility, symmetry, cardiovascular fitness, and balance are the areas structured off-horse training targets.
The limit on this reframe is firm. Skill is a modifying factor, not a substitute for an appropriate match. The pilot study stopped tests with experienced riders. Off-horse conditioning cannot make an excessive load safe, replace a veterinary or saddle-fit assessment, or guarantee a pairing works. Learn significant position changes with an instructor before testing them on a horse that may already be near its limit.
Check the Horse, Saddle and Work Before You Trust the Number
The same percentage places a very different demand on the horse depending on who is carrying it, how the load is distributed and what work is being asked.

Start with current soundness. A fit, comfortable older horse may be better prepared for a job than a young horse with a weak topline; age alone answers nothing. Conformation traits such as loin width, back length and cannon-bone circumference have been studied, but no single measurement or breed label sets carrying capacity.
Conditioning must match the work. A horse used to 30-minute flat sessions is not ready for long trotting, hills or repeated lessons just because the ratio looks modest.
The saddle has to fit both partners. A saddle that fits the horse but is too small for the rider forces an unstable position and poor load distribution. A bigger saddle is not automatically the fix if its tree, panels or length do not suit the horse’s back.
Be more conservative as duration, speed, intensity and terrain difficulty rise, and re-run the whole check when anything changes: the horse’s health, your weight or fitness, the saddle, or the job.
Signs the Horse Is Struggling With the Load
Before you ride, establish the baseline. The horse should move evenly in hand, show no new heat, swelling or back sensitivity, accept grooming and tacking up, and have recovered normally from the last session. A horse that already looks uncomfortable is not the one to test a calculated ratio on.
During the ride, watch and feel for new unevenness or shortened strides, altered rhythm, repeated stumbling or foot dragging, reluctance to go forward, new back or neck tension, unusually fast fatigue, heavy breathing or sweating out of proportion to the work, and new or persistent conflict behavior.
None of these is specific to rider weight. They can come from hoof pain, saddle fit, training confusion or fatigue, and an isolated behavior does not prove you are too heavy. But dismount and end the session if new lameness, gait abnormality, pain-related behavior or marked distress appears, whatever the percentage says.
After the ride, check for slower-than-usual recovery, new back or muscle soreness, stiffness after cooling down, a gait change that persists, and reluctance to be caught, groomed or tacked up next time. One comfortable ride does not establish long-term suitability; repeated loading and harder work reveal problems a single session hides.
What to Do With an Amber or Red Result
Use the band to choose the next step, not to deliver a verdict.
Under about 15% with no concerns: keep monitoring before, during and after work. A low figure is not a guarantee.
About 15% to 20%: check every modifying factor and keep sessions shorter, slower and on firm, level footing until soundness, conditioning, saddle fit and recovery have been assessed.
Near or above 20%, or any welfare concern at any percentage: get an individual assessment before assuming the pairing is suitable. An equine vet investigates lameness, pain, poor recovery, body-condition questions and unexplained gait or behavior changes. A qualified saddle fitter checks whether the saddle is unstable, too small for you, wrong for the horse or loading unevenly. Borderline cases often need both.
Adjustments that move a pairing toward the green band, or make an amber one safer:
- Weigh the tack and strip anything unnecessary
- Switch to a lighter suitable saddle where a fitter agrees
- Shorten or slow rides; cut jumping, speed and repeated intense work
- Choose firmer, more level footing
- Build the horse’s conditioning progressively
- Use groundwork while the horse gains fitness or the rider gains stability
- Ride a larger or otherwise better-matched horse
Alongside those, the rider’s own stability is the factor most within your control from home, and it is the one the Helsinki data suggests separates riders who worry from riders who don’t.
Two Questions That Do Not Settle It
Does BMI Tell You Whether You Are Too Heavy for a Horse?
No. BMI does not give the total load, include tack, show whether you fit the saddle, or say anything about balance, weight distribution, horse soundness, terrain or workload. Your weight goes into the calculation; BMI does not.
Is a Trail Barn’s 250 lb Limit a Biological Ceiling?
No. KOLI Equestrian Center, for example, publishes a fixed 250 lb rider limit while also weighing rider height, build, experience, mounting ability, tack and desert terrain (KOLI Equestrian Center’s weight policy). That limit governs one facility’s horses and service. A rider under it may still be a poor match for a particular horse, and another operator may set a different limit for its own string. Follow the provider’s current policy and give accurate weights when booking.
Answer “am I too heavy for my horse” as a process: weigh the complete load, divide by the horse’s ideal weight, compare your rider-only figure with the 12.9% survey mean, then evaluate horse, saddle, work and recovery. If the horse shows gait changes, pain behavior or poor recovery, stop and get professional input before the next ride. If the horse is fine and the number is amber, the most productive work is usually on your own balance, not your bathroom scale.
