This is a screening framework, not permission to fit or use draw reins without a qualified trainer who can assess the particular horse, rider, tack, and discipline.
Before proceeding, ask:
- Has discomfort been investigated rather than interpreting resistance as a head-position problem?
- Has the rider demonstrated an independent seat and stable ordinary-rein contact?
- Have less restrictive methods and unaided schooling been tried?
- Is the intended response specific and observable?
- Can the horse maintain it calmly after the aid is released and removed?
- Is the equipment being considered because of an objective need—or because it is normal in the barn?
That final question matters because familiarity is not diagnosis. Social pressure and perceived limits in riding or training ability were reported as drivers of auxiliary-rein use in a worldwide survey, while competition participation was associated with use. - appears trapped between the hand and leg.

The cited FEI Jumping Tack and Equipment Requirements take effect on February 1, 2027. As of September 2026, they are future requirements and do not establish the rules currently in force.
Under those future requirements for the specified FEI international jumping context:
- Draw reins, called running reins in the document, are prohibited in the competition arena except during prizegiving ceremonies and march-past parades.
- They may not be used alone; reins attached to the bit must also be used.
- They may not be used with a bitless bridle.
- When a horse is jumped in FEI warm-up or training arenas while wearing draw reins, obstacles may not exceed 130 cm.
- FEI officials may inspect equipment and prohibit tack that breaches the applicable requirements or may compromise horse welfare or horse or athlete safety.

Equipment permitted in one area may be prohibited in another, and officials may retain authority to reject tack on compliance, welfare, or safety grounds under the applicable official FEI requirements.
